Publication Ethics and Malpractice Statement
(Based on COPE’s Best Practice Guidelines and Elsevier’s Publishing Ethics Resource Kit)
Ethical Guidelines for Journal Publication
The publication of an article in EDOIS: Journal of Islamic Education is an essential building block in the development of a coherent and respected network of knowledge. It reflects the quality of the authors’ work and the institutions that support them. Therefore, it is essential that all parties involved in the act of publishing—authors, editors, reviewers, and the publisher—adhere to the highest standards of ethical behavior.
Duties of Authors
Reporting Standards
Authors must present an accurate account of their work as well as an objective discussion of its significance. Fraudulent or knowingly inaccurate statements constitute unethical behavior and are unacceptable.
Data Access and Retention
Authors may be asked to provide raw data for editorial review and should retain such data for a reasonable period after publication.
Originality and Plagiarism
Authors must ensure that their work is entirely original and that proper citation or quotation is given when the work or words of others are used. Plagiarism in any form constitutes unethical publishing behavior and is unacceptable.
Multiple, Redundant, or Concurrent Publication
Authors should not submit the same manuscript to more than one journal concurrently or publish the same research in more than one outlet.
Acknowledgment of Sources
Proper acknowledgment of the work of others must always be given. Information obtained privately must not be used without explicit permission.
Authorship of the Paper
Authorship should be limited to those who have made a significant contribution to the conception, design, execution, or interpretation of the study. All co-authors must approve the final version and agree to its submission.
Disclosure and Conflicts of Interest
All authors should disclose any financial or other substantive conflicts of interest that could influence the interpretation of their manuscript. All sources of financial support must be disclosed.
Fundamental Errors in Published Works
When an author discovers a significant error in their own published work, they must promptly notify the editor and cooperate to correct or retract the paper.
Duties of Editors
Publication Decisions
Editors are responsible for deciding which submitted articles will be published. Decisions must be based on the paper’s academic merit and relevance to the journal’s scope, without influence from commercial or personal interests.
Fair Play
Editors must evaluate manuscripts for their intellectual content without regard to race, gender, religious belief, ethnicity, citizenship, or political ideology of the authors.
Confidentiality
Editors and editorial staff must not disclose information about submitted manuscripts to anyone other than the corresponding author, reviewers, or publisher as appropriate.
Disclosure and Conflicts of Interest
Unpublished materials disclosed in a submitted manuscript must not be used in an editor’s own research without written consent from the author. Editors must recuse themselves from handling manuscripts in which they have conflicts of interest.
Duties of Reviewers
Contribution to Editorial Decisions
Peer review assists editors in making editorial decisions and may help authors improve their manuscripts.
Promptness
Reviewers who feel unqualified or unable to review a manuscript promptly should notify the editor and withdraw from the review process.
Confidentiality
Manuscripts received for review must be treated as confidential documents.
Objectivity
Reviews should be conducted objectively, and personal criticism of the author is inappropriate. Reviewers should express their views clearly with supporting arguments.
Acknowledgment of Sources
Reviewers should identify relevant published work not cited by the authors and alert the editor to any substantial similarity or overlap with other published papers.
Disclosure and Conflicts of Interest
Information obtained through peer review must be kept confidential and not used for personal advantage. Reviewers should not consider manuscripts in which they have conflicts of interest.
Duties of the Publisher
EDOIS: Journal of Islamic Education takes its duties of guardianship over all publishing stages seriously. The publisher ensures that commercial activities, such as advertising or reprint revenue, do not influence editorial decisions. The publisher works closely with editors, authors, and reviewers to uphold academic integrity and publication ethics at all times.
